Ashok Kumar Varma

Kolkata, West Bengal – India
Email: avarma_tes@rediffmail.com

Ashok Kumar Varma is a self taught artist whose fascination with art stems from his childhood. A visit to an art gallery exhibition overwhelmed and inspired him to the infinite possibilities of creativity and kindled his own talents to create something new. From 1986 to1996 he began building paper collages in his spare time away from engineering projects. From 1997 onward he developed his own technique in this medium. Ashok's collages are very different from the conventional paper collages and have the completeness of a full-blown oil or a mix media painting though not a drop of paint, ink or any other pigment is used anywhere in it. Everything he creates is with bits of paper only, sometimes as small as 2 mm in size. He has held 3 solo exhibitions (2000, 2003 and 2008) and has participated in many group exhibitions and shows organized by major galleries in India.
